ABOUT STEVE CAMPBELL Steve Campbell is a professional musician, performer, recording artist, and educator. He is Co-Founder and Musical Director of Dancing Drum. Steve is a talented multi-instrumentalist who plays djembe, djun-djun, drum set, balafon, steel drum, and other percussion. He composes original music and makes professional-quality field recordings during Dancing Drum's research travels. He has recorded numerous studio albums, including one with Senegalese sabar drum master Bara M’Boup, and played in several noteworthy drum ensembles and funk/rock bands, including Functus, The Fuzz, Amiaka, and Higher Movement. Most recently, he produced and recorded Dancing Drum’s first CD, titled “Listen to the Rhythm”. Choosing to work in music education outside the traditional classroom, Steve brings his credentialed teacher experience and 15+ years of study, teaching, & performance of drumming and music to Dancing Drum, where his talents as a musician are matched with his excellence at teaching. Students of all ages have enjoyed Steve’s drum workshops, from San Luis Obispo to Santa Barbara. In addition to co-directing Dancing Drum’s youth programs, Steve currently teaches adult drum classes at the Dancing Drum Rhythm & Art Center in Santa Barbara. Steve has traveled to many countries to study drumming, percussion, and dance, including Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Thailand, Guatemala, and Belize. Steve graduated from UCSB with a degree in Biology in 1995, and earned a California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential in 2002.
