STEVE CAMPBELL

 

Steve Campbell is a professional musician, performer, recording artist, and educator. He is co-founder, owner, and director of Dancing Drum.

 

Choosing to work in education outside the traditional classroom, Steve brings his credentialed teacher experience and 20+ years of music study, teaching, and performance to Dancing Drum, where his musical talents are matched with his teaching excellence.

Steve is a multi-talented instrumentalist who plays djembe, djun-djun, drum kit, balafon, xylophone, steel drum, congas, and a variety of other percussion. He composes original music and is in charge of making professional-quality field recordings during Dancing Drum's research travels.

 

Steve has recorded on numerous studio albums, including one with Senegalese sabar drum master Bara M'Boup and another with Grammy-winning Cuban percussionist Luis Conte. Over the past 10 years, he has played in several noteworthy drum groups, percussion ensembles, and world music bands.

Steve has traveled to many countries to study drumming, percussion, and dance, including Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Thailand, Guatemala, and Belize. He has also immersed in the drumming traditions of New Orleans music.

Steve graduated from the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) with a B.A. degree in 1994 and earned a California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential in 2002.
